Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District is the government agency that runs the rail line for Northern Indiana. Under NICTD's tutelage, a steady series of improvements was funded and ridership increased from 1.48 million passengers carried in 1978 to over 3.5 million passengers in 2000.

NICTD operates the rail service as a public service because the people and economy of Northwest Indiana need an alternative, reliable form of transportation to get to jobs, schools, museums, and recreational opportunities found in the City of Chicago. NICTD has helped make the South Shore strong once again. In turn, by providing a balanced transportation system, the South Shore can help make, and keep, the Northwest Indiana economy strong.

Impark manages the commuter parking lot at the Hegewisch station located at 13730 South Brainerd Avenue. It is a 335 space surface lot that has both monthly and transient parkers who commute into downtown Chicago. The cost is $1.25 per day or $27.50 per month. Impark Wireless service is available for this lot for commuters running late who want to pay by cell phone.
